This chart follows common-practice Western major and minor tonality. It does not fully describe modes, chromatic harmony, microtonal systems, historical tunings, jazz substitutions, or non-Western pitch organization.

How do you use the circle of fifths?
Start at C major. Move clockwise to add sharps and move counterclockwise to add flats. The inner key at each position is the relative minor. The key immediately clockwise is the dominant, while the key immediately counterclockwise is the subdominant.
Open Music Theory’s major-key explanation places key signatures around the circle by accidental count. Each neighboring major key differs by one accidental, so adjacent scales share six of their seven notes.

Direction shows the interval relationship between keys. The accidental count shows the written key signature. The tonic shows which pitch acts as home. A key signature narrows the possibilities, but cadence, melody, bass, and harmonic function reveal whether the passage is major or relative minor.

Key-signature shortcuts work when spelling stays correct
For a sharp key, move one semitone above the final sharp to name the major tonic. For a flat key with at least two flats, the second-to-last flat names the major tonic. F major is the one-flat exception. The University of Puget Sound key-signature lesson uses the same clockwise-sharper and counterclockwise-flatter relationship.
How to Identify a Key Signature Quickly
Use the last sharp or the second-to-last flat to identify most major keys. Then find the relative minor three semitones below the major tonic while preserving correct note spelling.

A semitone is the smallest standard step in twelve-tone equal temperament; three semitones form a minor third.

Place the home major key in the center. The counterclockwise neighbor supplies IV, and the clockwise neighbor supplies V. In C major, that gives F–C–G. This relationship identifies primary chord roots, but it does not choose inversions, seventh chords, extensions, rhythm, or voice leading.

The chart cannot identify octave, voicing, inversion, rhythm, meter, phrase structure, modal center, tuning nuance, or borrowed harmony. It also cannot prove a song’s key from the signature alone. Use listening, notation, cadence, bass motion, and harmonic function with the circle.
