“Ideal body weight” is a technical historical term, not a prescription for how a body should look or what every adult should weigh. The equations do not apply to children or pregnancy and must not be substituted into medication, nutrition, or ventilator instructions unless the relevant protocol names that exact method. What is an ideal body weight chart?
An ideal body weight chart compares height-based formula outputs. It does not reveal one biologically perfect weight. Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi use different constants, so the same adult height can produce several legitimate formula results.
A published review of ideal-body-weight equations explains that historical formulas and BMI-based ranges are not perfectly aligned. The safest interpretation is to name the method, understand its purpose, and use personal health context separately.
