A normal CBC result is one that falls within the age-, sex-, pregnancy-, altitude-, and method-specific reference interval printed by the laboratory. No universal range fits every person or laboratory.

What the three main CBC cell groups show
A CBC is not one number. It combines related measurements that answer different questions about oxygen transport, immune cells, and clotting.
Red-cell panel
RBC count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and RDW describe oxygen-carrying cells and their size variation.
White-cell panel
Total WBC and the differential describe immune-cell numbers. Absolute counts usually carry more clinical meaning than percentages alone.
Platelet panel

Direct answer

Read hemoglobin together with red-cell size
Low hemoglobin establishes an anemia pattern, but MCV helps separate microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic patterns. RDW shows how much red-cell size varies. These attributes guide the next questions; they do not prove iron deficiency, vitamin deficiency, bleeding, kidney disease, or a marrow disorder by themselves.

Why absolute differential counts are important
White-cell percentages always add up to the full differential, so one percentage can appear high because another cell type is low. The UCSF differential reference provides common adult percentages, while the absolute count shows how many cells are actually circulating.

Platelet count does not measure platelet function

Do children use adult CBC ranges?
No. Newborns, infants, children, and adolescents have age-specific hemoglobin, WBC, differential, platelet, and red-cell-index ranges. The first months of life show especially rapid changes.

Can dehydration change a CBC?
Yes. Dehydration can concentrate the blood and make hemoglobin, hematocrit, and cell counts appear higher. Large fluid intake or intravenous fluids can produce the opposite dilutional effect.
What does a high RDW mean?
A high RDW means red cells vary more in size than the laboratory reference population. It may accompany an evolving nutrient deficiency, recovery after blood loss, mixed deficiencies, transfusion, or other red-cell changes, but it is not diagnostic alone.
